Car Accident Q&A

I have no pain after an accident. Should I still see Dr. D.?

In the case of a serious accident, the need for medical attention is immediately obvious. However, minor accidents may have no apparent effect on a person immediately after the accident. The forces transferred in an auto accident can be tremendous, and this shock gets transferred through the body. The soft tissues do a remarkable job of cushioning and protecting the skeleton and organs, and that’s why there may be no initial pain.

However, Injuries to soft tissue can hold misalignments and, without treatment, may result in more painful conditions, such as chronic arthritis, over time. Whiplash occurs in surprisingly minor bumps, because the neck supports the full weight and movement of the head. Seeing Dr. D. within a couple weeks of an accident assures that later problems are less likely to emerge.

How does chiropractic treatment help car accident injuries?

Initially, Dr. D. does a physical and neurological assessment, ensuring there are no serious injuries that may lead to complications. This may include X-rays and a hands-on check of motion and response. If the patient has any pain or discomfort, Dr. D. addresses that next with the treatment suiting the nature of the injury. Since the spinal cord connects the brain to the body, treatment of the neck occurs even when pain happens in other parts of the body. Dr. D. recommends a series of treatments even after pain and mobility symptoms pass.

Is there a special treatment for whiplash?

Whiplash is an injury to the neck muscles caused by rapid movement of the head. Even low-speed fender benders transfer enough force to cause this condition. Whiplash may cause several types of injury, including muscle spasm, ligament damage, joint inflammation, and damage of the shoulders and back. Treatment depends on the diagnosis. Dr. D. may also recommend home treatments, such as cold packs, neck supports, and exercises to extend the effectiveness of office care.
